Mayweather-Mosley Now a Non-Title Match

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer earlier announced that the mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather (40-0-0) and Shane Mosley (46-5-0) will not be for the WBA title currently held by the latter.

Apparently, Mayweather did not want to pay the 3% sanctioning fee that would be deducted from both their purses. What led Mayweather to decline a championship belt? For starters, Mayweather always had a bias towards the WBC championship. He has said on may occasions that he thinks the WBC is the real championship belt.

Mosley won the WBA title with a dramatic ninth round TKO win over Anonio Margarito last year and this could have been his first defense of the said title.

Other aspects of the deal have yet to be ironed out. The WBA could declare the title as vancant if Mosley loses or they could keep him as their champion. If Mosley wins, his camp may also request that the win be considered a title defense so he does not have to defended it against a mandatory challenger. This will give him the breathing room he needs to negotiate a fight with Manny Pacquiao.

Although I feel that the title would have been a good reward for the winner of this fight, I’m not disappointed that it won’t be on the line. What’s important is that two of the best fighters in the world today are fighting each other. Mayweather could have used the WBA title as a bargaining chip should he win and renegotiate with Pacquiao, but I guess he thinks he’s got all the bargaining chips he needs.

Don’t forget to visit Register, pick a winner, and you could win one of two Everlast gloves signed by Pacquiao.
