1.4 million buys for Mosley-Mayweather

The final number is in. After the speculation that the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley got around 1.1 to 1.2 million buys as reported by Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports, the final number is in and it is 1.4 million.

This is not a bad number considering that many fight fans cannot afford to buy pay-per-views anymore because of the current economic state.however, this number is clearly a few steps below what the promoters expected. Richard Shaeffer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, first said that they were expecting 2 million buys. then a few days after the fight, he said that there are indication that the fight could sell up to 4 million. It is now clear that they are way off in their prediction.

On the contrary, Mannyy Pacquiao sold 700,000 pay-per-view buys against Joshua Clottey. He sold that much without an HBO 24/7 series and against an opponents that isn’t a household name. Mayweather had a very well known opponent in Mosley, who can sell pay-per-views himself, and an HBO 24/7 series, not to mention a couple of months of preparation more than what Pacqquiao had.

I think what this means is that Maywaether cannot demand a purse bigger than Pacquiao. When Pacquiao fights big-named opponents, he can seell a lot of pay-per-views. When he was up against Miguel Cotto, he sold 1.25 million and 1.05 million against Juan Manuel Marquez.

I hope this somehow pops Mayweather’s bubble. He isn’t all he says he is.
