Another one bites the dust: Mepranum KO’d

It was a generally quiet day for boxing with only a handful of good fights available. The biggest fight, by far, was the one featuring Ivan Calderon and Jesus Iribe. Pardon the pun, I know “Calderon” and “biggest” are two words that are hardly mentioned together in one sentence. Iribe floored Calderon in the second round but then proceeded to be thoroughly outboxed in the next ten rounds.

Filipino pug Richie Mepranum (22-2-1, 5 KOs) failed to win the WBO flyweight title as he suffered a fifth round knockout loss against Julio Cesar “Pingo” Miranda (32-6-1, 25 KOs). I don’t know if any of you have noticed but I think all filipinos who’ve tried to win a title shot this year have failed, most of them failed miserably.

There’s Ciso Morales getting knocked out in a single round by Fernando Montiel, then there’s Marvin Sonsona losing his bid at the WBO super bantamweight title at the heavy hands of Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr.

2010 has been a pretty fruitless year so far for Filipino boxing save for Manny Pacquiao’s win over Joshua Clottey and Drian Francisco’s win over Ricardo Nunez.

Let’s hope things get better.
