Marquez still has it

After Golden Boy Promotions announced that a rematch between Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz is going to happen, my initial reaction was “WHY?!”

The first fight was very good, so good that it was last year’s Ring Magazine Fight of the Year. However, I didn’t think a rematch would be good for Marquez.

First of all, I think Marquez took too many chances in their first fight. He was chasing a fight with Manny Pacquiao then, so he needed to sell himself as a viable opponent. He made the fight more exciting because he left himself open too many times. He wasn’t his usual counter-punching self as he appeared as willing as Diaz to mix it up.

Second, a win over Diaz won’t further the career or legacy of Marquez. We all know that he is the better fighter between the two. At 36, he’s only got a handful of fights left in him and as we know he’s still salivating at the thought of settling the score with Pacquiao. But a win over Diaz wouldn’t help his cause. Specially because Diaz is coming off a loss at the hands of Paulie Malignaggi.

But the fact of the matter is that Marquez absolutely dominated Diaz. Hopefully, Marquez leaves the lightweight division for the much better junior welterweight division with the likes of Amir Khan, Timothy Bradley, Marcos Maidana, and Devon Alexander. A fight with any of those mentioned could all be very good fights.
