Nietes retains title

Donnie Nietes is my second favorite Filipino fighter. I guess you all know who my favorite is. I think most people would say Nonito Donaire or even Drian Francisco, AJ Banal, or Milan Melindo but there’s something about Nietes that drew me in.

A big reason is that I witnessed him capture his first world title. I was there in Cebu and I watched him beat a Thai opponent who was using illegal substances to keep his energy up in the latter rounds of the fight.

He again defended his title against Mario Rodriguez via unanimous decision. What I do not under stand is why we let one of our better fighters defend his title outside our country. This is his third time to defend his WBO minimumweight title in Mexico. Yes, of the four times he defended it, he was in foreign soil.

Can we please make sure that Nietes fights more often in the country?

Nietes is a very good fighter and I think he’ll be moving up to the light flyweight division soon. Nietes has a good chance of hanging out with the big names opponents there and I know he’ll be a champion for a very long time.
