Drian Francisco to be named WBA world champion

I just got news from Drian Francisco’s manager that Hugo Cazares, the reigning WBA world champion from Mexico will move up in weight and relinquish his title rather than fight the unorthodox Filipino fighter.

As a result, Francisco, who currently holds the WBA interim title at 115 will be promoted to World Champion status.

Although it sucks that we won’t get to see Francisco-Cazares (which would have been as Jim Ross says a slobber-knocker), at least there is a silver lining, which if of course having another world champion. I spoke to Elmer Anuran, Francisco’s manager, and he said he’s now pursuing a unification fight against Christian Mijares.

You may remember Mijares as the fighter who defeated Jorge Arce. He considered as one of the best fighters in the world until he got crutally knocked out by Vic Darchinyan.

Francisco and Mijares have already shared the same ring before but not as combatants. Mijares came to the Philippines to watch Francisco defeat Roberto Vasquez. Mijares sang Francisco’s praises then and hopefully the IBF champion still feels the same today so a match between the two can be made.
